RIP Badal Roy. He plays tablas on several of the sessions collected on The Complete On the Corner Sessions — sessions which in my book are the pinnacle of 1970s Miles.
Roy was also a member of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time band for years though recorded evidence is scant (just Tone Dialing).
The NYT obit has many good morsels in it. “His introduction to jazz was hearing Duke Ellington perform in Pakistan in 1963”, for one. And Roy didn’t even listen to his copy of On the Corner until 20 years later.
