Mayan Space Station is a terrific William Parker record and also an excellent showcase for electric guitarist Ava Mendoza. You can hear classic-rock gods like Jimi Hendrix or even Eddie Van Halen in her playing, and you wouldn’t necessarily expect that to blend with Parker’s aesthetic, but somehow in this trio (with Gerald Cleaver) it all sounds perfectly natural.
